Pasdar enjoys the flexibility of working on ‘Heroes’

Adrian Pasdar sweeps into the restaurant in Chelsea, apologizing for being a few minutes late — because of horrendous cross-town traffic. If only he could have flown above Manhattan — an ability his character possesses on “Heroes,” this season’s new breakout hit.

“I think people can identify with the world that it lives in, but also [appreciate] the escapism that it provides,” Pasdar says, in that familiar deep and raspy voice. On this afternoon, city sidewalks are clogged with dirty slush from a recent snowfall, yet the Philadelphia-bred actor, briefly in from sunny Los Angeles, where “Heroes” is made, says that if he could, he would live in New York full time.”But it’s not where they make the movies.”Pasdar orders a favorite entree, Beef and Guinness, at The Half King, which is just a few blocks from the Manhattan apartment he still maintains. This is the very restaurant, he says, where his son Slade, now 5, took his first steps. He and wife, Natalie Maines, lead singer of the Dixie Chicks, also have a 2-year-old son, Beckett Finn, and Pasdar often takes both boys to the set with him.”They love it. It’s fun for them to be able to come and see how things are made and then watch the show on TV,” he says, adding that series television is a good fit for his life right now. “I get to come home every night, which is great. Most of the movies that they make are shot on location now — unless it’s a special-effects movie — and I can’t do that right now. I can’t go away from my family.”On “Heroes,” Pasdar plays the driven Nathan Petrelli, an attorney who’s running for Congress.”He’s a character that, in [creator] Tim Kring’s words, is ‘morally liquid.’ Somebody who makes decisions that seem to be self-serving, and then he’ll do something heroic, for lack of a better term, and then he’ll go back to doing something that is, again, self-serving,” Pasdar says.Nathan’s campaign has been fraught with complications. Besides trying to hide his own superpowers (self-propelled flight and levitation), and those of his younger brother, Peter (Milo Ventimiglia), Nathan had a fling in Las Vegas with Jessica Sanders (Ali Larter) and, more recently, he got news that he has a love child — Texas cheerleader Claire Bennet (Hayden Panettiere).”He wants the problem to disappear for a little while,” says Pasdar of his TV daughter. “But, we deal with that in the episode coming up in a very beautiful way. We have a very nice scene together.” (His answer is so deliberately vague, it’s hard to tell if this scene has yet aired.)Asked if that story line will play out for a while, he says, “To an extent.”He clams up fast when questions turn to future “Heroes” story lines.”There’s not really much I can proffer,” Pasdar says. “It makes it difficult to do interviews sometimes, because there’s so many things I’d love to be able to share with you. But they’ve all worked so hard to develop the stories, and it’s all so interconnected. They trust us not to divulge any information.”Pasdar has become very friendly with Ventimiglia. But he’s pleased that as the “Heroes” characters’ paths increasingly intersect, he’s getting to interact with more members of the large ensemble cast.”I haven’t worked with everybody yet, but that’s coming up in the next few episodes,” he says. “The writers explained the arc of the story to the actors early on, in broad strokes, and all those things have pretty much come to pass. So it’s been exciting.”Asked if he anticipated the show’s success, the 41-year-old actor — who saw previous critically acclaimed series like “Profit” die premature deaths — says, “There was hope, but I’m old enough not to expect anything anymore.”

You’d think a rock star was in the building the way the crowd poured into the TV Guide conference room when Heroes star Adrian Pasdar came by for a visit last Thursday. After pressing some flesh and autographing many TV Guide covers, Pasdar sat down with TVGuide.com to tease what’s ahead for Nathan and that blonde beauty who’s gunning for him. TVGuide.com: Do you know who we’ll be taping over? [I play a tape of a female saying, “This is what I can tell you about her: In all of us there is an angel and a devil, and you get two-in-one with her.”]

Adrian Pasdar: That’s Ali [Larter], the Jersey girl….

TVGuide.com: How’s that for kismet? So last we tuned in, Jessica had just gotten her assignment to snuff Nathan. Why do I have the feeling that when the moment of truth comes, those two will end up having torrid sex instead?

Pasdar: Well, we do end up in bed… but not like you think. I can’t tell you any more than that, but we do end up on a bed.

TVGuide.com: Are you surprised by the amount of support for that couple, based on just that one early-season encounter?

Pasdar: No. I mean, it’s a logical extension of the physical things that we bring to the show. But it does take an interesting turn in Episode 20.

TVGuide.com: Of course, Nathan has that other great pairing, with Masi Oka’s Hiro. Do you enjoy having those lighter moments to play?

Pasdar: Yeah, it’s fun. Every time there’s a script where we have a scene together, they leave a little blank space for us to improvise. It’s become a kind of tradition that we get to do that. It’s great doing stuff with him, because I think he embodies the unbridled enthusiasm of a child, where I, of course, am saddled with the responsibility of an adult. So the two characters, when we get together, it’s interesting.

TVGuide.com: Even before Heroes premiered, we here were making much of the last moments of the pilot, where Nathan swoops in to save Peter. Take us back to when you first read that scene in the script.

Pasdar: I still get goose bumps talking about it. It read just like it played, and that’s one thing about the show they have been able to consistently maintain: What they write is exactly what we film.

TVGuide.com: Enigmatic characters, good buzz, ardent fans — you’ve been down this road before, with the short-lived Profit. Did that temper your reaction to the reception Heroes was met with?

Pasdar: A little bit, yeah. I’m old enough to have been through this a few times, where you’re excited and happy, but you also realize it could all go away [Snaps fingers] just as quickly as it came. But I’m enjoying it.

TVGuide.com: Do you think your spring 2006 Housewives drop-by played a small but undeniable role in reestablishing your profile and getting you this plum role?

Pasdar: Oh, I don’t know… maybe. I’m the last person to ask about that. You’d have to ask my manager. [Sitting nearby, Pasdar’s manager points out, “Adrian spent two years on Mysterious Ways and two years on Judging Amy. He had not been off TV.”] That’s the thing, I don’t do a lot of press, so people go, “Oh, you went away and came back,” but I’m like, “No, I just decided to stop talking to the media for a while. That’s all.”

TVGuide.com: Could the Housewives role have been longer term, or was it stymied by the fact that your lawyer was macking on a pregnant Gabrielle?

Pasdar: No, I couldn’t have done any more than I did, three episodes.
TVGuide.com: Back to Heroes, was there one particularly difficult moment in safeguarding the secret of Claire’s paternity all these months?
Pasdar: No, you just can’t talk about it. But I had to tell somebody, so I told my 5-year-old. The day I read the script, I said, “Do you want to know a secret?” He goes, “What?!” I told him, and he held the secret the entire time.
TVGuide.com: We’ve only seen Nathan’s wife (played by Rena Sofer) in dribs and drabs. Might we get more of her before the season is up?
Pasdar: I think so. Rena’s been busy working on 24, but I believe she’ll be back.
TVGuide.com: Are there any bombshells left to uncover in that marriage?
Pasdar: Sure…. [Chuckles] Yes. The answer is yes.
TVGuide.com: The Dixie Chicks documentary Shut Up & Sing comes out on DVD Tuesday. Can fans look for any additional coverage of you? [Pasdar’s wife is lead singer Natalie Maines.]
Pasdar: I don’t know…. They took maybe three years’ worth of B-roll, so… I went to great lengths not to be a part of that because that was my wife’s thing and not mine, but I was in it. And I know I’m in a lot more than they used, so maybe.
TVGuide.com: Leave us with a last tease about the episode you just got done filming. A word. A place. A name. Anything.
Pasdar: How about… [Thinking] “Tick-tock.” That’s the tease. [To manager] Read the top page of the [Episode] 20 script. [Manager: “In accordance with the production’s zero tolerance for revealing script pages or ideas contained herein, to any person outside the production, you are reminded that this material is copyrighted, and unauthorized copying or disclosure of this material is prohibited and could result in your immediate dismissal.”]
TVGuide.com: Wow, you can almost feel the barrel of the gun against your temple!
Pasdar: He didn’t read the part that says, “The family is only as strong as the secrets we keep.” I love that part.

INTERVIEW: Adrian Pasdar and Milo Ventimiglia Talk Heroes

heros_int.jpg
The actors discuss their onscreen relationship, super powers, and their favorite episodes of the show

Recently we sat in on a conference call for NBC’s much talked about drama Heroes. This hit show follows a bunch of different people across the globe as they realize they have special powers. Speaking were stars Adrian Pasdar and Milo Ventimiglia.

Is it true that the major story arcs we’re currently seeing in the show will be brought to a conclusion by the halfway point of the show?

Adrian Pasdar: Well, I think from all of our perspectives there really can be no end to this story because one door closes and another opens. As it was explained to us early on, there may be periodic endings to subplots, but the overall arc of the story is just never-ending.

Milo, was it always decided how your character was going to discover his power?

Milo Ventimiglia No, going into the pilot I had no idea. I just thought there was this dynamic relationship between Nathan and Peter, and it was Peter aiding his brother Nathan in that he could fly. It wasn’t until a couple of months later, after the show had been picked up… Tim walked up to me and he had a big smile on his face and he said, “I think we figured out Peter.”

Milo, are we ever going to see what happens when you’re in the room with two superheroes?

Milo Ventimiglia I think there’s the physical pressure that Peter feels if he were in the room with two superheroes. The physical, mental overwhelming that it could possibly get him into. We do get into that, we do explore it and also, is he ever going to attain or is it just when he’s nearby somebody?

What’s it like playing superheroes who aren’t in any kind of costumes? Is it still fun?

Milo Ventimiglia Yeah, Adrian and I get to fly, the first feeling is ouch and the second is absolutely cool. You read the scripts they’re based in human emotion and these wonderfully written characters interacting. Yeah, of course, it’s cool to think about all the effects in the unreality stuff that we get to do.

Adrian Pasdar: I gotta say I was a little hesitant in the beginning. When you read things like this, they describe the stunts in the script you just say, “Oh man, if they don’t spend the money or the time on this, this is gonna look cheesy.” After seeing what the special effects team has been able to pull off episode after episode it’s really exciting, because what I know now is that they’re gonna take it to the next level. We read it and it’s great, but they’re gonna do something I can’t even imagine.

Could you two describe Nathan and Peter’s relationship?

Adrian Pasdar: There’s a definite challenge… I have a tremendous respect for Milo as a human being, and of course as an actor. We’ve become good friends over the course of this show. There’s an adversarial tone to their relationship. An alpha male composition to how they perceive each other. I don’t always treat Peter on screen with the respect that one would hope for, that’s somewhat of a challenge sometimes. I think their relationship is a combination of competition for not just success but the admiration of their parents.

Milo Ventimiglia Sometimes you’re working in highly emotional scenes and you’ll get lost in the moment. You’re having fun with your friend at work. It’s an opportunity to give to them as much as they’ve given back to you.

Milo, if this turns out to be the last episode of Gilmore Girls is there any chance you’ll make an appearance?

Milo Ventimiglia None.

Do either of you have a favorite episode of Heroes so far?

Adrian Pasdar: I liked Episode 5 where I got to fly, for obvious reasons. I also think they’re like breaths of air, how do you choose your favorite? Every episodes providing something unique and interesting for me to focus on, and I’ve just been lucky and privileged to be a part of the ones I have been.

Milo Ventimiglia 5 is definitely pretty rad for the reason of Nathan flying. I also like number 3. I just like where it went from the plot… kind of the continuation of the feel of the show. Getting into new characters… and number 6 I enjoyed because we finally got to see Leonard Roberts come in and do what he does which is amazing.

What does it say about this show that it can address comic books, Richard III, and the White House?

Adrian Pasdar: Well, that’s it really, it doesn’t have any limits on it. It’s only limited by what the writers can come up with.

Do you think the show might be too complicated for casual viewers?

Adrian Pasdar: Apparently not. The casual viewer would seem to be not a target audience. I think here, the audience is someone who sits down and watches TV…

Milo Ventimiglia I think anybody approaching the show is going to want things not spoon-fed to them. They’re going to want to answer questions for themselves, as well as receive answers. Sometimes that’s a pitfall, a show will ask too many questions and not give so many answers. I think a casual viewer as well as an intense viewer watching the show is going to enjoy it for the same reason.

What’s been your most surprising thing with your experience with Heroes?

Adrian Pasdar: It all seems like it’s been so well mapped out. There have been no accidents of that nature, or a surprise in a show like this would be some sort of accident whether it was positive or negative. I think everybody here on all fronts has realized the potential of this story, and they’ve done their best to achieve that.

Milo Ventimiglia I’d just have to agree with, Adrian.

Heroes currently airs on Mondays at 9/8c on NBC.

Adrian Interviewed by High School Classmate

Laura Nachman, who works as a reporter for the Bucks County Courier Times (PA) newspaper, just did an interview with Adrian. She is a friend and fellow classmate from high school of Adrian’s. I thought you all would like to read this great article.

In the midst of his three episode appearance on ABC’s smash hit “Desperate Housewives,” Marple Newtown High alumni Adrian Pasdar, 40, is enjoying yet another accomplishment in his acting career.

“I’ve received more publicity in two weeks then I have in 20 years,” Pasdar said from his Los Angeles home that he shares with his wife of five years, Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, and their sons Jackson Slade, 4, and Beckett Finn, 15 months.
Pasdar, who was known by his middle name while a student, participated in the plays and played for the football team while at Marple-Newtown.

He earned a football scholarship to Central Florida University, but after his first football game, was in a serious car accident, which ended his football and college career.

Returning to Pennsylvania, Pasdar worked for the People’s Light Theatre in Malvern before moving to New York City.

It wasn’t long before he landed a role in “Top Gun” with Tom Cruise in 1986. The parts kept coming. He co-starred in an independent film called “Torn Apart” with famed actor Gregory Peck’s daughter, Cecilia. Pasdar and Cecilia were engaged, but never married. The two are still friends and Peck is directing a documentary about the Dixie Chicks.

Pasdar met Ms. Maines when they were in the wedding party for fellow Dixie Chick Emily Ervin and Pasdar’s friend, musician Charlie Robison.

Pasdar has consistently worked in film and television the last two decades. Some of Pasdar’s better-known projects are starring roles in the critically acclaimed film “Near Dark,” the short-lived television Fox television series “Profit” in 1996, and a two-year run on “Mysterious Ways” on NBC and PAX. Before landing on “D.H.” Pasdar was on the CBS series “Judging Amy” for two years.
He’s also worked with everybody from Diane Lane, to Sean Penn and Al Pacino, to opposite Paula Abdul in a Lifetime movie. He said he hopes to eventually work with his wife, who he feels is “a natural.”

Though he said he didn’t get into acting for the fame, Pasdar is enjoying the excitement of being on “Desperate Housewives,” one of the top-rated shows in the country. He plays attorney David Bradley, who is representing the character of Carlos Solis.
“It was a lot of fun. It’s a well-oiled machine there. Even the moms at my son’s preschool are looking at me differently now.”
Pasdar and his family split their time between Los Angeles, CA, Austin, TX, and New York, NY. He returns to the area to visit his father, Homayoon, a surgeon, and his mother, Rosemarie, a travel consultant. (His parents were divorced years ago.) His sister, Anamarie manages the famed Gate theatre in London, England. He’ll most likely return to the area again, when his wife’s group, The Dixie Chicks makes a stop in Philadelphia, as they are scheduled to go on tour next year to support their new album.
Pasdar said he got a kick out of returning to the MN Class of ’83 20-year reunion two years ago at Paxon Hollow Country Club in Marple where he once worked as a caddie.

“It was great being back and not lugging around clubs,” he laughed.

After his stint on “D.H.” is completed (Nov.6), Pasdar hopes to work on another television series so he can stay in Los Angeles, where his oldest son is in preschool.

He also optioned the book “Virgin of the Rodeo” and hopes to direct.

13. Adrian: I haven’t seen a lot of your work because much of it is not available in the UK - or is not compatible with our systems. However, I loved what you did with the McCLaren character (good Scots name!) in Judging Amy - hope you get a chance to continue.
My question: I noticed that you have ventured in to directing a few times. Is that where you would see your career developing and if so, is there a novel or play which you dream of interpreting for the big screen?

17.I love you on Judging Amy! Adrian, you can wear a suit better than almost every other Hollywood actor, and you don’t look too bad in jeans either! Anyway, I was wondering: What is your favorite Dixie Chicks song?
ANSWER: AP”Am I the only one (who ever felt this way).” from WIDE OPEN SPACES album.
18. Dear Adrian, firstly I wanted to say I think you are the best actor! My question is: When you were making Judging Amy did you feel as though you were actually part of the Gray’s extended family, because you made me believe you were! You were brilliant as David McClaren I hope you return in Series 6. Congratulations on the birth of Beckett Finn.
ANSWER: AP”Did I feel as if I were a part of the Gray family? We only had a few scenes together, but we did have a nice time. Everyone made me feel at home, as it wer
19. Dear Adrian: I have to make this comment first because it relates to the question. I had the pleasure of meeting your wonderful wife and her two beautiful friends Emily and Martie when they performed here in Hamilton in August 2003. I was so pleased at how the four of us just chatted about life, family, kids and the simple things. Please do say hello to the girls for me and my question is this: The other day I took my 14-year-old son to see his first out door concert; we went to see “Doc Walker” at a music festival. As I sat on the grass in the park enjoying the beautiful sunny afternoon I thought to myself “If I were famous; I don’t think I would be able to do this because people would be coming to me for autographs and wanting to talk to me all the time”. That thought made me realize just how much of the simple little things famous people have to give up and, for a moment, I felt sad for you and your family. So my question is this; how do you and your family manage to still enjoy those simple things and do you ever regret having to give some of them up in exchange for the fame and fortune?
ANSWER: AP “The biggest compromise you make when you enter into this arena of life is the one of privacy. More often that not it is, for me, quite difficult. I am very private by nature, and very shy. So it often feels
like an intrusion is underway when in fact, it’s not. I have learned to deal with it as best as I might hope to. My wife is actually very generous, and I try to be more like her when I should. Which is most of the time.
20. Dear Adrian, my name is Joseph Bowman, I’m a fifteen year old actor in Colorado and unlike everyone else who submitted for Sharon’s
“question pool”;I am actually your biggest fan. You are actually responsible for my becoming an actor. You inspired me when I was hit with a skin problem that scared and damaged the skin on my face and body since I was ten. I became a fan of yours through your Lifetime TV movies and had an interest in the paranormal so by the time Mysterious Ways came about I watched from day one because I believed in miracles and hoped for one that would bring back the good looks I had been born with. My question is this: Since you inspired me, I have dreamed of the chance to work with you and not to dig to deep because I respect your privacy, but do you plan to start Bobcat Films again? If so could I send you a Headshot/Resum’e one day after I’ve worked for more acting credits? To just have at least one film directed by you on my resume would mean so much to me and would like to thank you now for all that you have done to inspire me so THANK YOU
ANSWER: AP”I am certain that if you make it as an actor, you will be able to find my agent. And by extension, me. Break a leg, and give it all you have Joseph. ”
21. Hello Adrian, you are the epitome of a great actor…. the camera loves you, as do we all! I have always maintained You and Amy Brenneman are the Tracy and Hepburn of our day and age. your acting ability brings to the table a depth, and a sincere believability. Its obvious you are a very giving actor which allows amy to raise the bar of her acting… Their is something pretty magic that is felt by all who have watched you and Amy playing your roles as intelligent love interests on JA… How do you define the chemistry you and Amy Brenneman share when acting together?
ANSWER: AP”Chemistry is magic. You know what it is. We all, from time to time, experience the feeling of just getting along with someone without even trying. The trick on film is to keep that magic alive without relying on it. ‘Cause the second that you do that, your dead. Quite often you can feel like a juggler running out of hands if you exploit friendship for the sake of entertainmen
22. They asked Natalie this on ‘chick chat’, so we should ask you too. What CD’s do you currently have in your player?
ANSWER: AP ” I have in my CD the soundtrack from BIG FISH, Tom Waits’ SWORDFISH TROMBONE, some Obie Trice, and a little Dean Martin for those long rides home.”
23. Hi Adrian, You are absolutely the most beautiful man I have ever seen! I feel your heart and soul are just as beautiful. Congratulations to you and Natalie. Welcome to Beckett and hugs to Slade.
I am reading “Naked Lunch” and wondering what makes it your favorite book? Sincerely,
ANSWER: AP”I like the slanted perspective that NAKED LUNCH brought to my life. I remember riding the subway in New York and feeling like I was the only person in the world who understood the book. I am certain, now, that the truth was just the reversed. I was 19 years o
24. Actually, this isn’t so much a question as a hello to Adrian’s sister Anamarie… I’d love it if you could pass it along. She and I were neighbors in Media, PA *many* years ago, when we were little kids. I don’t know if she remembers me, but I’ve always remembered her and her very cool sit-n-spin! Is she doing acting? Wherever she is, I hope she’s doing well.
ANSWER: AP”. I will tell my sister that you say hello. You remember that sit and spin? ‘
25. As much as I like you as an actor…your roles always seem so real and honest…I just want to ask: Aren’t you one of the happiest dads around these days?!
ANSWER: AP”I am by far one of the luckiest dads in the whole world.”
26. Mr. Pasdar, What other actor(s) do you admire most and why?
ANSWER: AP”_. Robert Mitchum, Joel McRea, Charles Laughton. And the Three Stooges. All of ‘em.”
27. First, Adrian, congratulations on your personal and professional success, and especially the arrival of your new son! We had the pleasure of meeting 11 years ago at a film festival in Charleston, South Carolina where I was on staff and you were visiting for Grey Knight. I’ve followed your career since then, and have been so pleased for your success.
Now, for my question, . Do you still keep in touch with any of your Mysterious Ways castmates? Has there ever been talk/could there ever be standalone TV films with the MW crew? I still miss the show and would love to see y’all reunited. Has the idea been bounced off PAX?
ANSWER: AP”MWays was a really, really, fantastic time in my life. I had the best castmates and crew you could ever want. We still keep in touch periodically. As for any further Mways activity, I would have to say I think not. But, you never know…..”
