Celebrity Shark Week

Adrian was sitting at a table with me on the dock, wearing colorful shorts, and white golf shirt, a baseball cap, and red-shaded sunglasses. The actor, sometimes better known for his marriage to Dixie Chick, Natalie Maines, is very confident-bordering on cocky at times-as he contemplates the night dive he’s about to experience. But he also has the necessary caution and respect that is crucial when one is about to go face sharks on their home field. “I don’t have any experience diving with sharks, so I think this is a whole new ballgame,” he says in his raspy voice. “I’ve done night dives, but in cold water with a minimal amount of nocturnal marine life, never something like this. You can’t see the sharks coming until the last moment. Everybody seems to be concerned. The crew is concerned about this dive. I’m as ready as I can be- I just don’t know what to expect. I don’t think my family really know what I’m doing. I talked to my wife and my Mom and Dad, and they’re all just like, ’Be very careful.’” He laughs, “I figure if there’s a shark out there with my name on it, he’s out there swimming right now. It’s somewhat predestined. I know I’m not going to do anything foolish, I can count on that. This is my second Father’s Day and I’d really like to be able to hold my son again.”
That night no sharks were seen. Adrian graciously stayed on a second night to try again. This night paid off. During the 45 minute out to the Cove, Adrian still seemed pretty confident about the dive. As the light grew darker, the chum (dead fish heads and the like) drew the sharks, and dorsal fins could be seen everywhere. The scene took about 45 minutes to film. Adrian is amazed by his experience, but still a tad cocky, joking at one point that he was the reason so many female sharks had decided to flock around them down there. The experiment Adrian tried was to feed sharks chicken, which they hate. After they passed Adrian, the sharks spit out the chicken. Adrian was having so much fun down there that he and Nigel were shaking hands and laughing.
